Guide to caring for your silver jewelry

Love for your silver jewelry

With proper care, your new handmade silver jewelry will retain its beauty for many years to come.

Silver and oxidation

Your jewelry is made of sterling silver, an alloy consisting of 92.5% pure silver and 7.5% other metals, typically copper. This composition gives the jewelry strength while preserving the beautiful shine of silver.

Silver naturally reacts with sulfur in the air – a process called oxidation. This appears as a dark film on the surface and is not a defect, but a natural property of silver. Regular care can keep your jewelry shiny, but you can also choose to let it develop a patina, which gives the jewelry character and highlights details.

Also be aware that various natural stones can also be sensitive to chemicals.

Daily use

  • Remove the jewelry during activities such as swimming, exercising and cleaning.

  • Apply perfume, cream and hair products before putting on jewelry, and wait 10-15 minutes.

  • Avoid contact with chlorine and chemicals, which can permanently discolor the silver.

  • Wipe the jewelry with a soft cloth after use to remove sweat and skin oils.

  • Wear your jewelry regularly – your skin's natural oils can actually help keep the silver looking nice.

Storage

  • Store the jewelry in an airtight bag or jewelry box when not in use.

  • Separate your jewelry from each other to avoid scratches

  • Find a dry and cool place away from direct sunlight.

  • Try antioxidants – a piece of chalk or silica gel in your jewelry box can reduce oxidation

Cleaning

  • Gentle cleaning: Place the jewelry in lukewarm water with a drop of mild soap for 10 minutes.

  • Use a soft brush for hard-to-reach areas, such as a baby toothbrush

  • Rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft cotton cloth.

  • For oxidized designer jewelry: Use only water without soap to preserve the dark finish that is a deliberate part of the design.

  • Homemade silver polish: A paste of baking soda and water can be used for regular silver

Professional care

  • Stop by the store and get a free cleaning of your jewelry - we recommend professional cleaning a few times a year.

  • Check regularly that the stones have not become loose and that the lock is working properly.

Remember that your silver jewelry is a handmade and unique design that deserves thought and care. The patina that develops over time tells the story of your life with the jewelry – some even choose to let this natural process be part of the jewelry’s charm.
