Guide to finding the right ring size

Methods to measure ring size without an existing ring

Ring size is the inner circumference of the ring. Here are methods for finding your ring size, both with and without an existing ring.

Without an existing ring

Method 1: Paper/String, scissors, pencil and ruler

  1. Cut a strip of paper about 10 cm long or find a string.
  2. Choose the finger where the ring will be worn and twist the strip/string around the finger so that it fits relatively tightly.
  3. Find the point where the paper/string overlaps and draw a thin line. It may help to have someone else do this.
  4. Measure with a ruler how far it is from the end of the strip to the line. For example, if it is 59 mm, you should use a size 59. It is advisable to measure twice to be completely sure.

With an existing ring

Method 1: With Ruler

  1. Find a regular ruler.
  2. Measure the inside diameter of your current ring. Be aware that wide rings often require going up a size as they have a larger surface area on the finger.
  3. Multiply the measured diameter by Pi (3.141592) to find your ring size. For example, if your current ring has an inner diameter of 16.9 mm, the calculation would be 16.9 x 3.141592 = 53.09. So you would need a size 53.

Method 2: Paper, scissors, pencil and ruler

  1. Cut out a piece of paper approximately 3 x 8 cm.
  2. Carefully fold the paper into a roll and place it in the ring. Then cut a notch in the middle of the overlap.
  3. Unfold the paper and measure the distance to the clip to find your ring size.

Standard ring sizes for men and women

Ring sizes typically range from 48-58 for women and 58-66 for men, depending on which finger the ring will be worn on. These sizes are based on EU standards. Here is an overview of EU sizes compared to US sizes and their inner measurements in diameter and circumference:

Important tips when measuring ring size

To achieve the most accurate measurement, here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  1. Measure your finger several times: Since finger size can vary throughout the day, it's a good idea to measure your finger several times at different times to get an accurate average.
  2. Avoid measuring after physical activity: Measuring after physical activity may give an inaccurate size as the fingers may be swollen.
  3. Choose the finger the ring will be worn on: Be sure to measure the specific finger the ring will be worn on, as sizes can vary between fingers.
  4. Pay attention to the width of the ring: Wide rings often require a larger size, so take this into account when measuring.
  5. Temperature: Make sure your fingers are at normal temperature when measuring ring size, as they can swell in heat and shrink in cold.

The importance of the right ring size

A ring should not only be beautiful, but also comfortable to wear. A ring that is too big can slip off your finger, while a ring that is too small can be uncomfortable and difficult to put on and take off. The correct ring size ensures that the ring fits securely and comfortably, which is especially important for precious jewelry and those with sentimental value, such as engagement and wedding rings.
